Meal prep has saved me!

I have had a number of friends ask me about the details of my weight loss over the last year and a half. I love to talk about it, but I always worry about being one of those people who talk too much about a thing, so I try my hardest not to bring it up unless someone asks! I want to finally share all the ins and outs of my year and a half (and counting) long process with you!

I have had many weight loss false starts and even a few successes over the years. I know many people who agree with me that weight loss can be a lifelong struggle and it has been that for me since I was a chubby 14-year-old. I was very uncomfortable in my skin at that age and didn’t understand why I wasn’t slim like my friends despite similar eating habits and activity levels. The first time I lost a good chunk of weight I was around 16, I don’t remember exactly how much I lost; I think it was around 20 lbs. My mom helped make me a meal plan with a bunch of things I could easily make myself and I remember it working well to have a plan! After I graduated from high school and stopped dancing I steadily gained weight into my twenties.

About a year after Ryan and I got married I decided I was done being fat. I had hit my highest weight ever of 250 lbs which was absolutely mortifying for me. I started with using the My Fitness Pal app and just ate low carb-ish (read: mostly whatever I could fit into my calorie allowance) paired with a little exercise and logging it all religiously. I lost 50 lbs in a year and then I found out I was pregnant with Miss Anna. At first, I couldn’t figure out why I couldn’t lose any more weight and then the tiredness came and then I realized I should probably take a test! I was so happy but also disappointed I couldn’t continue losing weight since I had about 20 lbs until I reached my goal. During my pregnancy with Anna, I gained back 25 lbs, which I had a very hard time coming to terms with. It was frustrating to see the numbers increase weekly on the scale but also I was very tired and didn’t have the energy to be diligent with my food intake. I wasn’t able to lose much during the 2 years after Anna was born but I did manage to maintain that weight. When I got pregnant with Gracie I gained another 30 lbs and then I was back to where I started, which was again, SO. FRUSTRATING. After Grace was born I was chomping at the bit to start losing weight again but it was hard for me to focus on anything other than Grace and Anna in the first year.

In August 2015 I decided that when we got back from our yearly summer trip with the Keon family I would buckle down and start the big task of losing the weight for good. There were no more babies or other stresses in our future so it was TIME. I planned out some recipe ideas ahead of time and started thinking about doing meal prep like I’d seen become so popular in the weight loss community. Now, I wish I could remember what the very first thing I made was but I do have ALL my recipes saved and logged into the extremely handy My Fitness Pal recipe function. Now, here I am a year and a half out and I’ve lost 80 lbs and I’m still going! I’m so proud of the length of time I’ve managed to stick with this, in fact, I’m more proud of the time than the pounds. I’ve managed to continuously prep meals weekly for a full YEAR AND A FREAKING HALF! I never thought I’d make it this far but here I am. The difference this time is that I’m removing the ability for me to “cheat” when I already have food I’ve prepared and tastes delicious ready for me to pop off the lid and heat up for every meal. It’s a no-brainer, it immediately removes the temptation because A, I’m lazy and B, I hate wasting food!
